Should obesity be considered a disability?
Posted on 09 February 2011

An abstract about research findings from a project investigating the controversial issue of whether obesity should be considered a disability was recently accepted for presentation at the 2nd National Obesity Summit in Montreal, Quebec this April 28th to May 1st 2011. Given the high prevalence of obesity in North America and the similar daily challenges faced by those with obesity and among the disabled, the study looked into the controversial questions related to this issue. After exploring definitions of disability in the literature and summarizing legal findings, the study concluded that obesity has been considered a disability in a number of jurisdictions and should be considered a disability in Canada. Bethany Easterbrook, a student in Kinesiology at the University of Toronto and Dr. Alice Aiken of Queen’s University will present the findings at the National Obesity Summit.
