Inclusive Education Policy in New Brunswick

After 27 years, New Brunswick has an Inclusive Education policy in place. Dr. Gordon Porter, president of Inclusive Education Canada, and Community Lead for CDPA’s Education team, applied the findings of his extensive research to assist the government of New Brunswick in its development. The policy was unveiled by the Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Jody Carr in late September, 2013.

The basis of the policy is that every student is capable of learning. Its principles are that inclusive public education must be:individualized, focusing on students’ particular strengths and needs; universal, with curricula provided equitably to all students in a common learning environment shared among age-appropriate peers; implemented by school personnel who are flexible and responsive to change; offered in an environment where students and school personnel feel safe and valued – an environment that is respectful of student and staff diversity in race, religion, national origin, ancestry, place of origin, age, disability, marital status, real or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, or both,  sex, social condition, and political belief or activity.
